It's an established fact that rising sea levels will affect the supply of fresh groundwater along the South Carolina coast — it already has, especially in some shallower, private wells east of U.S. Highway 17.
Thousands of properties along South Carolina's coast, including Beaufort County and Hilton Head Island, could be subject to chronic flooding in the next 30 years, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.
