During the winter of 2017 and into the summer 2018, the entire region experienced unusually warm temperatures and exceptionally heavy precipitation consistent with what climate change models predict across the Arctic.
The city of Miami considered reorganizing its resilience department, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation's 100 Resilient Cities program, with its public works department. Activists lobbied to keep the resilience department as its own department.
