On Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s first trip abroad after winning last month’s election, he pledged to protect the Amazon rainforest and said Brazil was “leaving its cocoon.”
The disappearance of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira, and the Brazilian government’s inadequate response, are part and parcel of President Jair Bolsonaro’s unwillingness to confront the catastrophic environmental damage underway in the Amazon.
The agency has announced a series of policies intended to elevate those efforts, including the creation of an office meant to address the “harm caused by environmental crime, pollution and climate change.”
