An Austin, Texas-based oil and gas company was fined about $42 million by the State of New Mexico for alleged air pollution violations at facilities in the southeast region of the state.
Texas allows a portion of pollution fines to be directed to projects that remediate environmental harm. Some of those projects benefit the companies that are being penalized.
