Opened in 1969 as a base load power plant designed to provide electricity to large areas of Pennsylvania and New York, the Homer City Generating Station in Indiana County is shutting its doors.
The largest coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania recently became the latest to announce its retirement plans, prompting questions about its future use and highlighting the debate over the state’s transition to a green economy.
Citing low prices for its main competitor, warm winters, and environmental regulations, Pennsylvania’s largest coal-fired power plant will shut down by July 1, the company that owns it said.
