Diesel to electric: Cost-effective solution for cleaner trucking

California-based Evolectric is giving diesel trucks a second life by converting them into electric vehicles, providing a cost-effective, sustainable solution for small fleet operators who are often left out of the electric transition.

Erin Stone reports for LAist.

In short:

  • Evolectric converts older diesel trucks into electric vehicles, slashing pollution and saving smaller businesses up to 70% on maintenance and 60% on fuel costs.
  • These retrofitted trucks are ideal for urban fleets, which produce significant pollution through idling and short trips, addressing major air quality concerns in cities.
  • Although state incentives help offset conversion costs, federal programs have yet to fully embrace retrofits, limiting their scalability.

Key quote:

“The electric transition is not going to take away blue-collar jobs, in our opinion. The familiarity that an existing technician has with existing vehicles translates rapidly into this new technology.”

— Bill Beverley, cofounder of Evolectric

Why this matters:

Medium and heavy-duty trucks are a major source of air pollution and greenhouse gases. Evolectric's approach not only reduces these emissions but also makes clean technology more accessible to smaller operators, bridging equity gaps in the electric vehicle transition.
