The deal is the most ambitious effort yet by the United States and European countries to coax a developing nation into abandoning the dirtiest of the fossil fuels.
Last year, coal production fell to the lowest level since 1978, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Tuesday.
