Un vistazo a una de las 132 ciudades que recibió un fondo de la EPA para monitorear el aire

Houston, conocida como la capital de energía del mundo, ha estado rodeada de petroleras y plantas industriales, conocidas fuentes de contaminación del aire, desde hace mucho tiempo.

Según el Greater Houston Partnership, Houston aporta el 45.3% del petróleo a nivel estatal y el 14.3% del crudo a nivel nacional.

La Agencia de Protección Ambiental dice que la industria de petróleo y gas es la fuente industrial más grande de compuestos orgánicos volátiles, VOCs por las siglas en inglés. Los VOCs son tóxicos del aire que empeoran la contaminación del ozono y podrían causar cáncer. Gracias a la ley de Reducción de la Inflación de Biden, la EPA dio una beca a Houston a cerca de 500 mil dólares para que la ciudad evalúe los niveles de VOCs en el aire.
